Strasbourg court condemns Italy

ROME, JANUARY 8 - Small, overcrowded cells violate the rights of prisoners: the Strasbourg Court condemned Italy to inhuman and degrading treatment of 7 detainees in Busto Arsizio and Piacenza, providing compensation for a total of € 100 thousand and giving one year time to adjust. 

The judgment is "a mortifying confirmation of the inability to guarantee the basic rights of prisoners", said the President Napolitano. "Dejected, but not surprised", the Justice Minister Severino.
